Welcome to our website "Traditional music and musical instruments of the Kyrgyz"
This is one of a series of websites which is planned to cover the many different aspects of Kyrgyzstan: the people and their traditional lifestyle and culture; the places and the history of the country; and (especially as we are a tour company) about the tourism potential of the country and the region.
The reason we are creating these sites is that we find many people know little about this small country in the heart of the Asian continent, and which straddles the ancient Silk Road. As a result they have many questions. We hope that the websites will answer some of these questions and also introduce the country to a wider audience. We hope that you find the site interesting and helpful. We welcome your comments and suggestions as to how we can make it more so.
This particular site concentrates on the different musical genres which can be encountered in Kyrgyzstan.
There were several different types of traditional music: vocal and instrumental. As with all cultures there were, for example, work songs, celebratory and ritual music. The themes embodied in the music and the sources of inspiration encompassed happiness and sorrow, love and courage, freedom and equity and the relationship the nomads enjoyed with the natural environment. Over many centuries, songs and music were handed down from generation to generation amongst the nomadic Kyrgyz creating a rich heritage, both oral and aural, and it was only when they came into the Russian sphere of influence that their traditional music was written down in any form, yet alone in musical notation. The Russians also brought many different forms of music with them.
